After the man was killed, police found the 3-year-old girl in his car. She was taken to a hospital with injuries to the upper body and died later, police say.

On Sunday, police identified the man as Frederick Roy Miller, 38, of Landover. The girl was the shooter's daughter, and it appears Miller had stabbed and shot her, based on initial reports from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, police say.

The two adults who were shot earlier are the child’s maternal grandfather and great-grandmother, police say. They were taken to a hospital, where they are in critical condition.

When police responded to reports of a shooting in the 4200 block of Farmer Place in Fort Washington, they found two adults suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

Officers spotted a suspect driving a Nissan Altima and pursued him.

The man stopped briefly at Beech Rd. at Branch Ave when his car lost a wheel. He shot at police who returned fire. He took off again, before stopping in the 4600 block of Branch Ave. at Auth Road in Temple Hills.

The shooter and police exchanged gunfire again and the man was shot and killed.

Investigators have not yet determined the motive and circumstances of why the suspect shot his daughter's caretakers. The girl's mother was not present at the time of the shooting. She was found unharmed.

In a statement released Sunday, police identified the officers involved in the shootout:

The six involved officers are identified as Patrol Officer Alba De Jesus, assigned to District IV. He's been with the PGPD for two years.
Corporal Clarence Black, a 12-year veteran assigned to the District IV Special Assignment Team, Patrol Officer Brett Fairbrother, who's been with the department for a year and currently assigned to District IV, Corporal Paul Schweinsburg, a seven-year veteran assigned to the Regional Investigation Division and Patrol Officer Christopher Gehlhausen of District IV, who's been with the PGPD for three years.

All are Prince George's County Police Officers. Master Trooper Williard Shelton of the Maryland State Police is a 17-year veteran assigned to the Forestville Barrack. None of the officers was injured. All are on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
